How we coach

CareerPointers is career coaching as a product. This page is how that coaching actually works: where it starts, what it pays attention to, and what it will not pretend to do. In plain language.

No fabricated match scores

No one can compute that number honestly, so a tool that shows one is guessing with confidence. Instead we name the specific gaps we can actually see, and what to do about each one.

A breakdown, never an oracle

When we do put a number on something, like your interview practice feedback, it comes apart into the pieces that produced it, with coaching on what to work first. A score you cannot take apart is a verdict, and a verdict is not coaching.

Different stages get different words

Someone two years into their first job and someone twenty years into a career do not need the same advice, so they do not get the same words. Near the start you tell us roughly where you are. From there every part of the journey speaks to that: an emerging professional and a seasoned one get different prompts, and different warnings about the pitfalls that come with that stage. And when we have to guess your stage, we guess low; you can always tell us we are wrong.

Stories before structure

Before we help you shape a story, we ask you to just tell it: what happened, in your own telling, in the order it happened. Only after that do we help you turn it into a situation, the task you owned in it, the action you took, and the result. We start with your telling on purpose, because the structured version is built from it, and any detail you leave out of the telling has nowhere to come from later.

Coaching tells you why, not just what

Everywhere the coaching asks something of you, it also tells you why that thing matters, in plain words, before you do it. A step you understand is one you can actually take, adapt, and repeat on your own later. We would rather you know why a story needs a real result than simply be told to add one.

One more standard you will mostly notice as an absence: if a question would not change the coaching we can give you back, we try not to ask it. And if any of this ever reads like a slogan instead of what the product does, tell us. That is coaching too.
