How to approach Change & Transformation questions at your career stage
Years of full-time work, in any field.
If you have had time away from work, "recent" in this advice means your most recent role. Name the gap in one sentence and move on to the work.
Emerging
0 to 2 years
Change stories count at any scale: a tool you got a team to adopt, a process you fixed at an internship, a workflow you rebuilt at a part-time job. Tell it in the STAR shape (situation, task, action, result): two sentences of situation, one of task, then what you did and what changed. Say it out loud a few times before the interview. A story you have spoken keeps its shape under pressure.
Established
3 to 7 years
You have carried change more often than you have sponsored it, and that is the useful angle. Pick one rollout you worked inside. Say who resisted it, what you changed about the plan after you heard them, and what adoption looked like ninety days later. Bring one that stalled too, with what you would do differently.
Seasoned
8 or more years
Your biggest transformation may also be your oldest. Reach for a recent one even if it is smaller. Compress the organizational backstory to two sentences. They do not need the history of the department. And bring one that did not go to plan. A long record with no misses is hard to believe.
Executive
You run or have run a function or business
Your change record likely reached the room before you did. Pick the transformation where something broke. Say what you misjudged and what you now do differently. Then ask what the last change effort here left behind.
