How to approach Strategy & Vision questions at your career stage
Years of full-time work, in any field.
If you have had time away from work, "recent" in this advice means your most recent role. Name the gap in one sentence and move on to the work.
Emerging
0 to 2 years
You may not have set strategy yet, and you can still show how you think. Name a trend you actually follow, the tradeoff it creates, and what you would want to learn before betting on it. "Here is my read, and here is what would change my mind" is a strong answer.
Established
3 to 7 years
You are close enough to the work to know what a strategy costs to execute. That is the view worth giving. Take one position on where your specialty is heading, name the tradeoff it forces on the team that has to carry it out, and say what evidence would make you revise it. Hold one question for the end: how does this team decide what not to do?
Seasoned
8 or more years
Skip the tour of everything you have watched the industry do. Pick one clear view, give the evidence, and defend it under pushback. Hold one question for the end: where do you see the field going? Their answer tells you how much room this role has to set direction.
Executive
You run or have run a function or business
Your thesis either fits theirs or challenges it. Know which. State a position in under a minute and name its risk yourself. Then ask what their leadership team is still debating.
