How to approach Leadership & Influence questions at your career stage
Years of full-time work, in any field.
If you have had time away from work, "recent" in this advice means your most recent role. Name the gap in one sentence and move on to the work.
Emerging
0 to 2 years
You do not need a title to answer these. Leadership shows up any time you got a group to move: a class project, a shift you ran, a club you organized. Pick a real moment, name what you decided, and say what happened next. Keep it small and true, and tell it plainly, so the interviewer can follow it and ask about it.
Established
3 to 7 years
Much of your leadership so far has run across teams you do not manage. Use that. Pick one project where you moved work across a team boundary. Say what you owned, what the other group owned, and the call you made when they disagreed. Hold one question for the end: which handoff in this role breaks most often?
Seasoned
8 or more years
You have more leadership stories than they have time. That is the risk. Pick one from the last few years, even if an older one is bigger, and compress the setup to two sentences. Say what you decided and why. Then stop and let them ask the next question.
Executive
You run or have run a function or business
They are listening for how you talk about the people you led and the peers you disagreed with. One recent decision, the tradeoff, the outcome. Then ask what leadership problem this role inherits.
