How to approach Results & Impact questions at your career stage
Years of full-time work, in any field.
If you have had time away from work, "recent" in this advice means your most recent role. Name the gap in one sentence and move on to the work.
Emerging
0 to 2 years
You have numbers even if your scale is small. Count something: users, hours saved, error rates, dollars, people trained. "I rebuilt the signup process and cut no-shows from 40 percent to 10" is a real result at any level. Do not inflate. A small number you can defend beats a big number you cannot.
Established
3 to 7 years
You have real numbers by now. The gap is usually scope: whose number it was, over what surface, for how long. Give the metric, then the part you owned end to end and the part you shared. Expect a follow-up on how it was measured, so bring the baseline you started from.
Seasoned
8 or more years
Your best number might be from years ago. Lead with your most recent one anyway. A dated headline invites the question you do not want: what have you done lately? Give the metric early, keep the backstory to two sentences, and be ready to explain exactly how the number was measured.
Executive
You run or have run a function or business
Every result you will cite was a team result. Name your decision inside it, then credit the organization. Expect the number to be tested in follow-ups and reference calls. Claim only what a former colleague would confirm.
For every career stage
On the missed-target question, give the target, the number you actually hit, and the gap first. Then say what you did next.
